Welcome to the College of Education
and Human Services
The College of Education and Human Services includes five academic departments and the Horace Mann Laboratory School and is home to Northwest’s Professional Education Unit, preparing teachers, counselors, and administrators/leaders for the nation’s school system.
Northwest has been continuously accredited at the national level since the inception of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in 1954, and is accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Northwest annually graduates some 225 new teachers and 75 graduate students at the Masters and Educational Specialist levels, and as well many students annually complete the doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis through our cooperative doctoral program with the University of Missouri – Columbia. As such, Northwest has one of the largest programs in education in the state of Missouri.
Supporting the Professional Education Unit are the Horace Mann Laboratory School and a cadre of Professional Development Schools, in both rural urban and suburban settings, as well as many other professional staff in collateral programs and professions. A Columbia Teachers College “Schools of Education Study Team” recently labeled Northwest, “a school to watch” in terms of new programs developed supporting urban schools.
