This spring was busy for the Dallas Bearcats as the chapter sponsored a wine tasting event in Grapevine, Texas, based on the popularity of last year’s event. Chapter members also attended a coffee house event at Saxby’s, which is owned and operated by Bill ’87 and Jody Allgood ’88 Priestley, as well as a garage sale fundraiser where proceeds benefit the chapter’s scholarship endowment. Other spring and summer events on the calendar included a family day at the Ft. Worth Zoo in April followed by social events in May and June, and a community service event at the Dallas Children’s Medical Center.
The Dallas Chapter will round out the summer with a work day at the North Texas Food Bank, a social for parents of incoming freshmen and a Rough Riders baseball game.
A group of Northwest Dallas Alumni met on February 9th at the Homestead Winery in Grapevine, TX for a fun evening of wine tasting and networking. 1977 grad Nancy Minchillo and her husband attended this event, their first since the Chapter began. We welcome all Dallas alumni and friends to attend one of our upcoming events.
In June, members of the Dallas Chapter took shots at each other playing paintball in Grapevine, Texas. They agreed that anyone who says it doesn’t hurt to get hit by a paintball is not telling the truth.
This summer, chapter members met at a dueling piano bar, volunteered at the North Texas Food Bank, went to the Improv Comedy Club and visited a mircobrewery. In the fall, the Dallas Chapter gathered for several happy hours at Love and War in Texas.

Eight Northwest Dallas Alumni met on October 20th at SMU to work football concessions carts as a fundraiser for their scholarship. Kickoff was at 7:00 p.m. between SMU and Tulane and the Bearcat Alums were on hand to sell ice cream and bottled drinks to many thousands of fans. We raised several hundred dollars towards our scholarship fund.
The Dallas Chapter hosted a football watch party in December to support the Bearcats in their win against Bloomsburg. There were even Northwest alumni visiting Texas from the Kansas City area who read about the watch party and attended. In January, the chapter attended a wine tasting event at the Homestead Winery. In February, the chapter members volunteered at the North Texas Food Bank. Efforts that day resulted in helping feed 700 people for the month. Chapter members agreed that they should participate in this event again this summer and then annually. In April, the chapter participated in the Multiple Sclerosis walk in downtown Ft. Worth. The chapter raised funds for this cause, and Steve Sutton, director of alumni relations, was there to walk with the chapter.
On May 24th the Dallas Area Alumni and Friends gathered for a fun evening of wine tasting and networking at Su Vino Winery in Grapevine, TX.
On June 9th the Dallas Bearcats gathered to play paintball at XdRenALin in Grapevine. We all agreed that anyone who says it doesn't hurt to get hit by a paintball (especially those being shot from the gun of a teenager) is not telling the truth. After several hours of traipsing thru the woods to play several courses with vigor, the Dallas Bearcats decided that next time, we'd play in the winter when we could have many more layers of clothing to protect us. It was a lot of fun and we really learned to watch one another's back.

The kickoff for the Dallas Chapter was June 23 at the Chammps Americana in Addison. Steve Sutton, Northwest's director of alumni relations, presented the chapter with its official banner and gavel in granting the charter to the new chapter. About 30 alumni attended the event, including Joe Zelenz '52, who also is a Northwest Alumni Association board member, as well as chapter officers Deb Tripp '92, '96 and Jennifer Fenner '03. During the meeting, the chapter started a scholarship fund, conducted a raffle and sold custom T-shirts to heighten excitement for the chapter. Many members expressed interest in giving their time toward community service in the Dallas area, so plans are being made for future volunteer events.
The focus group for the Dallas Alumni and Friends Chapter has hit the ground running. Information about future chapter events will be available soon. Persons living in the Dallas area who wish to get involved with the chapter should contact the Office of Alumni Relations at (660) 562-1248 or alumni@nwmissouri.edu.
In November, nine Northwest alumni from the Dallas area gathered at Castle Hills Country Club and met with Steve Sutton, director of alumni relations, to discuss forming a Dallas alumni chapter. Because there are more than 300 Northwest alumni in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, this is an ideal location for an alumni chapter. The following officers were elected: President Deb Tripp '92, '96, Vice President Les Clark '00 and Secretary Jennifer Fenner '03. The group also met this winter to discuss chapter goals and to plan an alumni event in Dallas this spring.
The Northwest Missouri State University Alumni Association is establishing alumni chapters worldwide. Organized by alumni volunteers and supported by the Office of Alumni Relations, these chapters sponsor a variety of activities for alumni to get together socially and stay abreast of news from Northwest Missouri State University.
