Job Description

To provide assistance to students enrolled in a traditionally difficult course; Attend training, re-attend course and offer three weekly study review sessions to students currently enrolled in the course; Attend every course lecture; Establish communication loop that includes course instructor, TDC director & office manager and SI supervisors; Present the SI concept and expectations to students enrolled in class; Plan SI sessions including an introduction and closure; Present course content to students; Re-direct questions during SI sessions; Develop effective collaboration skills; Participate in SI and CRLA training; Assess "big picture" or theme from daily lectures; Determine appropriate strategies for helping students understand concepts; Integrate course content and learning skills; Ensure that all attendees participate in discussions through various collaborative learning techniques;  Employ creativity and flexibility in all aspects of role; Market SI effectiveness to currently-enrolled students; Re-direct questions during SI sessions; Knowledge of e-mail; Use on-line training; Prepare for SI sessions by reading text and supplemental material, reviewing lecture notes, meeting with course instructor; Develop collaborative learning techniques and learning skills; Develop strategies to support a variety of student learners; Seek support and guidance from other SI Leaders, SI supervisors, other TDC staff, and the SI training manual; Evaluate data from previous semesters to plan approach for current trimester; Participate in the International College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) tutor training/certification program; Attend course every day; Take notes in course every day; Do class homework assignments; Analyze course content to determine best collaborative learning strategies; Use the language of the discipline; Develop appropriate session closure strategies that include summaries; Interact regularly with course instructor; Support and encourage students; Exhibit professionalism and courtesy; Maintain confidentiality; Promote student involvement with course content; Lead study sessions for peers at least three times each week; Work independently and with minimal supervision; Re-adjust lesson plan quickly if students are not grasping content or delivery; Model "good student" behavior in and out of class; Lead peers through a rigorous course; Demonstrate ability to work positively with others including course instructor, SI supervisor, students & other TDC staff; Have ability to work with diverse on campus population; Interact regularly with international students, underrepresented populations, and students of varying academic abilities.

Qualifications

Received an 'A' in respective course; Recommendation from respective course instructor.

Wage Rate

New minimum wage takes effect January 1, 2009; Wage rate to be determined.

10 Hours

Start Date

Spring 2009 Trimester; SI training/orientation is held on Sunday, January 11th; TDC staff training is held every Tuesday morning at 7:00 am or 8:00 am throughout the trimester.
