Northwest Missouri State University/
Joplin School District
Beginning in 2006 Northwest Missouri State University and Joplin R-VIII School District formed a relationship focused on developing leadership in teachers and embedding graduate studies into the district’s teacher in-service work through the M.S. Ed. in Teacher Leadership. Led by Dr. Kerry Sachetta, Joplin High School Principal, the program began the first cohort (2006) limiting applicants to Joplin High School teachers. The cohort saw its completion in July 2008 when Joplin teachers traveled to Northwest’s home campus in Maryville to attend a reception hosted in their honor and ended the evening by walking across the stage receiving their degree. The second cohort (2007) was open to all levels of the district and is expected to conclude in summer 2009. The doors were opened to neighboring school districts for the induction of the third cohort (2008).
Students participating in the program meet on one night a week for four hours over the two years of the program. They coordinate with the instructors to plan meeting dates. Course instruction also includes research, projects and online course work.
