Students pursuing an M.S. in Recreation take part in advanced studies pertaining to Parks and Recreation professions serving both the general population and individuals with disabilities. Degree seeking students are able to choose from two emphasis area options, Recreation Resources Management and Therapeutic Recreation. The Recreation Resources management option prepares students for administrative-level professional opportunities in municipal, outdoor, corporate, and private parks and recreation agencies. The Therapeutic Recreation option prepares graduates for director-level job opportunities in therapeutic, adapted, and inclusive recreation services. Curriculum associated with the Therapeutic Recreation option allows students to work toward Masters level certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (MTRS). Both options require 33 hours of graduate coursework, which is typically finished in 1 1/2 to 2 years.
