MARYVILLE, Mo.—Northwest Missouri State sports information graduate assistant Jared Verner ’08 has been selected for one of two $5,000 postgraduate scholarships granted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Verner is just the second member of a Division II program to earn a CoSIDA postgraduate scholarship and the first in 20 years. Verner was awarded the Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship, named in honor of the former CoSIDA Scholarships Committee chairman and long-time Sports Information Director at Northern Arizona University.
“Jared is a once-in-a-lifetime find in a sports information office and a well-deserving individual for this high honor,” said Northwest Sports Information Director Bryan Boettcher. “The entire athletics department is appreciative of his efforts and was thrilled to learn that he would continue his education at Northwest.”
Kendra Lee, a graduate assistant in The Ohio State University Athletic Communications Office, claimed the second postgraduate scholarship. The scholarships will be formally announced and presented during CoSIDA’s annual workshop in Tampa June 29 – July 2.
Verner, 20, completed his bachelor’s degree in journalism in May and is currently pursuing a master of education degree in health and physical education. Verner spent two years at the Missouri Academy on Northwest’s campus and enrolled at the University in the summer of 2006. He’s worked in the sports information office since the fall of 2005.
Verner carried a 3.6 grade point average as an undergraduate while playing an extensive role in the department. He even served a brief stint as interim director in June of 2007.
Verner served as the primary contact for women’s soccer, cross country, track and field and tennis last season. He will be the primary contact for volleyball, women’s basketball and baseball during the 2008-09 academic year.
