Northwest Athletics Announces Staff Hirings and Promotions

MARYVILLE, Mo.—Northwest Missouri State Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter has announced the hirings of Allison Hyland as assistant volleyball coach and Tessa Koschel as assistant cross country and track and field coach. In addition, former Northwest assistant volleyball coach Steph Martin has been named Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. All changes are effective Aug. 1.

Martin has spent the past two seasons with head volleyball coach Anna Tool after serving as the Bearcats’ team captain as a player in 2004. Martin was the head volleyball coach at Maryville High School in 2005 while pursuing her master’s degree at Northwest.

Martin spent two seasons on the volleyball squad at Iowa State University before becoming a two-sport star at Northwest. She was the MIAA champion in the indoor 800-meter run and finished 10th nationally in the event in 2004.

Martin and her husband, Tyler, reside in Maryville. Tyler is currently serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Northwest football team.

Hyland, a 2007 graduate of Northwest, rejoins coach Tool after a playing career spanning 2002-06. She spent a one-year stint earning All-America honors in volleyball at Des Moines Area Community College in 2003 before returning to Maryville in 2004. Her 3.06 career kills per game average ranks fifth in Bearcat history.

Hyland was the head coach at Craig R-III School in Craig, Mo., in 2007, and also served as an elementary and secondary school counselor.

Koschel rejoins Northwest head cross country and track and field coach Scott Lorek after competing for Lorek at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. Koschel was a four-year member of the Mountaineers’ track and field team and combined for 12 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors in high hurdles, pole vault, high jump, long jump and heptathlon.

A native of Denver, Koschel makes the move to Northwest after spending the 2007-08 academic season as a graduate assistant track and field coach at Western Illinois University. Prior to that, she spent one year as a volunteer coach at Western State followed by one season at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
