MARYVILLE, Mo.—Northwest Missouri State junior safety Myles Burnsides has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for the period ended Oct. 26. It’s the first such honor Burnsides, a native of Maryville and a 2008 team captain.
Burnsides picked off Washburn’s Dane Simoneau on a 4th-and-10 play with 3:16 to go and returned it 35 yards to allow Northwest to run out the clock and secure a 24-21 win Saturday in Topeka. It was the eighth interception of his career and his third this season to lead the team.
Burnsides led the Bearcats with nine tackles (six solo) – the most by a Northwest player since he logged his season-high of 10 in the season-opener against Abilene Christian.
He also kept the Bearcats’ first scoring drive alive in the second quarter when, while lined up as an upback in punt formation, he took a direct snap and raced 36 yards to the 1-yard line. Northwest took the lead on the next play from scrimmage and led the rest of the way. It was the first career carry for Burnsides.
