Northwest Missouri State Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter announced the hiring of Pat McLaughlin as the head women's golf coach. McLaughlin becomes the first ever women's golf coach at Northwest as the sport was awarded official intercollegiate varsity status on April 28, 2006. Women's golf will begin official competition beginning in the 2007-08 season.
"I am honored and very excited to be named as the first women's golf coach at Northwest," said McLaughlin. "I am looking forward to the challenges of transferring our club team into a varsity team that brings pride to the Northwest athletics department and University as a whole."
McLaughlin has been the club women's golf coach at Northwest since the club was formed in the spring of 2001. McLaughlin's plan is to have 10-12 athletes on the varsity squad as he already has four returners from the club team. He also is looking to schedule five events in the fall of 2007 and four in the spring.
A 1975 graduate of Central Missouri State, McLaughlin grew up in Excelsior Springs, Mo., and currently is a Northwest professor in the academic fields of law and insurance. He has taught at Northwest since 1978. He earned his law degree from UMKC in 1978.
He resides currently in Maryville with his wife Lana. He has two daughters, Megan (25) and Erin (22). Megan was a member of the 2001 club team and helped jumpstart the sport at Northwest.
Rick Schultz, the golf pro at Mozingo Lake Golf Course, will assist the program in swing development and instruction.
"I am pleased that Dr. McLaughlin has agreed to be our intercollegiate golf coach," said Boerigter. "Coach McLaughlin's passion for golf and support of our club program has been very beneficial in helping women's golf become an intercollegiate sport at Northwest. I am looking forward to a smooth transition to intercollegiate play under his leadership."
