
TOPEKA, Kan. – Katie Swenson recorded 29 assists and 13 digs for her fourth-straight double-double of the season as the Bearcats (3-9, 0-1) fell in three to No. 3 Washburn (12-0, 1-0) tonight in Lee Arena.
Washburn took a narrow lead to start the first set, building up a four-point lead at 12-8. A three-point Bearcat swing off the serving of Paige Spangenberg brought the margin to within one. Another two-point swing tied the set at 14-14 before the Lady Blues used a 4-1 run to take an 18-15 lead on the way to a 25-19 victory in the first set.
Northwest held the lead through the first half of the second set, after taking an early 5-2 advantage. The Lady Blues tied the set seven times before taking the lead at 14-13 and going for the 25-17 win.
The Bearcats opened the third set with five straight points, two from back-to-back kills by Rachel Nisi. Washburn answered back with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 7-7, and a later eight-point rally put the Lady Blues up 18-10 on the way for another 25-17 win in the final set.
Nisi led Northwest with 11 kills and a .276 hitting percentage. Swenson led the Bearcats with her seventh double-double of the season and 22nd of her career with a team-high 13 digs.
Northwest begins the home schedule Friday against Fort Hays State. The Tigers swept Missouri Western tonight in Hays, Kan., to start their conference season.
