Student Advocacy

At Northwest, the Dean of Students is one of the many student advocates.  Ensuring that the student voice is heard is a primary focus of the Dean of Students.  In order to provide the most appropriate and helpful support, the words, “student advocate” need to be clearly understood.

Student advocate for all students -- in this capacity, the Dean of Students will protect the rights and access to services of all Northwest students.  This perspective does not value one student over another student, or one student over many students.  This perspective does value the rights of many students to live in a positive community over the wishes of one or few students to behave counter to the larger community.

Student advocate for one student -- there are times when one student is having difficulty managing his or her way at Northwest.  This may look like academic struggles, financial problems, or disciplinary issues.  The Dean of Students will work to ensure each individual student understands his or her situation, options, and how to manage life in this context.  There will be times when advocating for a student does not mean doing what the student wants.  Frequently, the best life lessons are learned after a student experiences difficulty and even a set-back.  Many students recover and come back stronger and wiser to complete their academic goals.

Our actions show that we care for students at Northwest.  In the Dean of Students office, students come first.  Our hope and anticipation is to have all students graduate from Northwest having had an enriching student experience that they will appreciate for years to come.
