First SOAR session this week

An estimated 1,400 incoming freshmen and their families will visit Northwest Missouri State University during the next two weeks to take part in the University’s annual SOAR program begins this week. The first of eight SOAR (Summer Orientation Advisement and Registration) sessions is scheduled Wednesday, June 18. Approximately 2,100 family members are expected to accompany their students to Maryville.

SOAR offers a day-long program for incoming freshmen and their parents. During the event, students will visit with upperclassmen who share similar interests and meet with faculty advisors to discuss fall classes.

The entering freshmen also will visit residence halls, attend presentations about student services and have the opportunity to talk to representatives from a number of offices on campus. Parents and family members also may attend special programming designed to answer their questions and at least 2,100 family members are expected to visit with their students.

“Students who come to SOAR have an advantage because they become more familiar with the culture of Northwest, and they get to meet students on campus and begin to make friends,” said Leslie Chandler, coordinator of student orientation and transfer affairs. “They also get to know some upperclassmen so they get a sneak-peek at what college life will be like.”

In addition to this Wednesday’s event, SOAR days also are scheduled on June 20, 21, 24, 25, 27 and 28, as well as July 1.

“It’s important for us as a University and for the community to put our best foot forward for these visitors, and show them what a great place Maryville is to live and learn,” said Brad Landhuis, assistant director of advisement. “One of the great attractions of Northwest is the collaboration between the university and the community, and this is a great time for new students and parents to experience the bond between Maryville and Northwest.”
