Meet the Staff

The University Wellness Center is staffed by a team of health care professionals who are committed to the provision of excellence in services and care.

Gerald Wilmes, M.D.

Medical Director, Emergency Coordinator

Dr. Wilmes received his medical training at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Before coming to Northwest, he was in private practice in the Columbia area. He is on the medical staff at St. Francis Hospital and Health Services and has served on the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health, and as consultant on various committees for Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph.

In addition to providing outpatient care, Dr. Wilmes works closely with the Counseling Center regarding mental health issues, and with Athletic Training as one of the team physicians providing medical coverage for Northwest athletic teams.

Dr. Wilmes believes strongly in prevention and wellness and feels that the whole person, not just the disease or illness, should be considered when treating or preventing illness. He is an avid reader, runner, cyclist and amateur naturalist. His wife, Robin, is a speech therapist. They have four children, two of whom are in college.

Katherine Darnell, M.S.

Family Nurse Practitioner

Kathy obtained both her B.S. and M.S. in Nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia and has been a credentialed and practicing Family Nurse Practitioner since 1987. Prior to coming to the Wellness Center, Kathy was in private family practice in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Kathy's special interests in health care are in preventative medicine, and management of chronic diseases and has been recognized repeatedly for her contributions in achieving "top measurable outcomes" by the Missouri Pro and other health care advocacy groups. Kathy is passionate about educating and implementing healthy lifestyle measures so that we not only prepare our students to meet their academic and professional goals, but more importantly, how to maintain a healthy and balanced life. In addition to being the provider for the students acute and chronic health care conditions, Kathy works in collaboration with the counseling team for the mental health needs of the students.

Kathy loves flower gardening, tri-athletics, volunteering for her church and community, and spending time with her husband, Wes, and their four children. 

Judy Frueh, RN, WHNP

Womens Health Nurse Practitioner

Judy received her BSN from Rockhurst College in Kansas City. She then received her Women's Health Nurse Practitioner certificate from the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She most recently completed her Masters Degree in Nursing through the University of Missouri-Columbia.

As a nurse practitioner, her emphasis is on preventative health and patient education. She has a special way of personalizing the care she gives. Judy is married with two children. She enjoys attending church and her children's activities, especially 4-H.

Beau Dooley, MPH, MACSAPP

Director of Wellness / Assistant Director of Health Services

A native of Southwest Louisiana, Beau Dooley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a Master of Public Health degree from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He has served as a Health Education Specialist in the U.S. Peace Corps in Mali, West Africa and has been working in the field of college health for the past several years. In his free time, Beau is an avid marathon runner and an accomplished blues guitarist. 

Vince Shisler

Operations Coordinator

Vince Shisler has served as Operations Coordinator for Health Services since February 2006. A graduate of Northwest, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Psychology. Vince enjoys working with students and helping them take a more proactive approach to their overall wellness. Vince is originally from Albany, MO and in his free time he enjoys listening to live music, traveling and spending time outdoors.

Mallory Budden

Wellness Center Coordinator

Mallory Budden joined the Wellness Center team in July 2008 as the Wellness Center Coordinator. Previously, she was employed as the Executive Secretary for Student Affairs. Mallory holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Middle School English Education and a Master of Science degree in Secondary Educational Leadership, both from Northwest.

Sally Klaas, RN

Staff Nurse

Sally is a Registered Nurse with more than 20 years of experience in college health. She is know across campus for her compassion and kind spirit. She is the leader of our nursing team, and we rely heavily on her clinical experiences. Sally also enjoys spending time with her family, and her hobbies include gardening and walking with her bulldog Lucy.

LeAnne Carmichael, LPN

Staff Nurse

LeAnne joined our team in 2002 and brought with her 11 years of clinical experience. She has worked for the state of Missouri since 1997. She has an excellent rapport with patients and goes the extra mile to help each one. LeAnne and her husband enjoy watching their two children's many activities. She loves to cook Italian food with fresh ingredients from her garden, reading, and doing genealogy research on her family.

Kim Heard, LPN

Staff Nurse

Kim is a native of Maryville and recently joined our team in 2007. She previously worked in the surgery department at St. Francis Hospital. Kim loves working with people. Kim and her husband Rick have 5 girls and one adorable granddaughter, Braelyn. Kim and her family enjoy camping, boating, fishing and being outdoors.  Kim's other hobbies include cooking and reading.

Jodi Loucks, RN

Staff Nurse

Jodi is a native of Maryville and attended Northwest for 2 years. She earned her RN degree from Park University. She previously worked at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City and the North Kansas City school district. She and her husband Jonah have a son named Colton, they enjoy spending time together outdoors and boating.
